Tokyo 東京: Hatoya Asakusa ハ十八浅草 || Asakusa

The Hatoya Asakusa is a Japanese tea specialty shop run by Masahiro Maruyama-san, the owner of Hatoya Ruoyousha Arashiyama Kyoto, who pursued authentic matcha after training at a tea shop.

They carefully selected only the highest quality tea from Kyoto Prefecture and every year during harvest season, they participate in the tea harvesting process alongside the producers. By visiting and interacting with each producer and also understanding the artisan of tea ceremony tools, they give their first hand experiences to customers while preparing matcha right in front of them.
Hatoya Asakusa is a renovated 70 year old wooden house built without any nails, creating a modern Japanese space. It is located at the Sumida Park neighbourhood but with limited standing space in the shop, therefore, a lot of people often enjoy the finely selected Japanese teas, lattes and sweets at the Sumida Park that has a great view of the Tokyo Skytree with Sumida River.
It is a very popular tea shop in Tokyo which known for its authentic Kyoto ceremonial-grade matcha. The tea shop is constantly flooded with locals and tourists. Therefore, we went during off-peak so that we will not have to queue for too long.
The shop offers a variety of Japanese tea lattes and sweets like 2 types of Matcha latte (blend or roasted), Houjicha latte, Black tea latte, Japanese tea and some sweets like matcha pudding, houjicha pudding, 8 8 parfait and affogato.
We ordered one blend matcha latte (700 yen), one roasted matcha latte (900 yen) and one Hatoya matcha strawberry daifuku (600 yen). The matcha features a distinct, bold, earthy flavours. The sweetness levels can be customized to your own preference.
They prepared every cup of matcha latte right in front of every customers, giving them an experience & a glance of how matcha latte is made from scratch.

The exquisite flavour and vibrant green colour of the matcha are truly fascinating.

Other than matcha latte, they also offers a variety of matcha baked goods like matcha terrine, matcha cookies, matcha financier and etc. I guess the Matcha Strawberry Daifuku was a seasonal item as it was not available in their usual menu.
Matcha Strawberry Daifuku (600 yen)
ごちそうさまでした. Thank you for the foods. Love everything we had in Hatoya Asakusa. If you are a matcha lover, I highly recommend stopping by here when you are visiting Asakusa/Sumida Park.
